The forest had changed.

Or perhaps…

Benny had.

The frantic excitement that had carried him from the cabin that morning had softened into something quieter. More thoughtful.

His paws no longer crashed through fallen leaves.

He had begun stepping where Jaguar stepped.

Not because he had been told to.

Because he’d discovered the woods sounded different when they weren’t constantly announcing your arrival.

They walked beneath towering pines, morning light filtering through the branches in long shafts of gold.

A woodpecker hammered somewhere in the distance.

The creek murmured over smooth stones.

Wind whispered through needles high above them.

Benny listened.

Really listened.

After a long while, he finally broke the silence.

“Jaguar?”

The great guardian glanced toward him. “Yes, little one?”

Benny’s ears tipped thoughtfully. “Why are they called the Holy Cat Things?”

Jaguar walked another dozen paces before answering. The question deserved more than a quick reply. “They are not truly about cats.”

“They’re not?”

“No.”

“They are about service.”

Benny frowned. “…Service?”

Jaguar stopped beside an old cedar whose roots rose from the earth like ancient hands. He rested one broad paw against its weathered trunk. “You love the Queen.”

“Very much.”

“You love Storm.”

“I do.”

“You would protect them.”

“I would!”

“You would make them laugh.”

Benny smiled proudly. “I already do.”

“…Constantly.” The corner of Jaguar’s mouth twitched.

“Then you already understand more than you realize.”

______

They continued walking.
The trail narrowed.
Sunlight danced across patches of moss.

Jaguar’s voice blended so naturally with the forest that Benny wasn’t entirely sure whether the words came from him…or the woods themselves.

“The First Holy Cat Thing teaches us to listen.”

Benny nodded. “The woods speak.”

“They do.”

“So do hearts.”

The little kitten looked up.

“The Queen speaks even when she says nothing.”

That stopped Benny in his tracks. “What do you mean?”

Jaguar looked toward the trees. “When she grows quiet. When she forgets her tea. When she stares through a window without seeing what lies beyond it. Those are words.”

“They are?”

“They are simply spoken without sound.”

Benny thought back.
The week after the Nutella.

The way the Queen had watched him.
The way she’d smiled…and then looked again.

“…I didn’t hear those.”

“No.”

“You were not listening yet.”

______

“The Second Holy Cat Thing teaches compassion.”

They rounded a bend where a squirrel perched upon a fallen log.
It froze.
Watched them.
Then darted away.

“I wanted to chase him.” Benny meowed.

“I know.”

“But…” Benny hesitated. “…he was probably going somewhere.”

“He was.”

“He might have been bringing breakfast home.”

Jaguar nodded once. “Every creature is living a story we cannot see.”

______

“The Third Holy Cat Thing teaches patience.”

Jaguar knelt beside a cluster of brilliant mushrooms.

“They’re beautiful.”

“They are.”

“Can I touch them?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because beauty is not permission.”

Benny looked down at his paws.

“…Like the Nutella.”

Jaguar said nothing. Silence answered well enough.

“I scared her.” Benny said regretfully.

“You did.”

“I didn’t mean to.” Benny swallowed.

“I know.” Jaguar’s voice remained gentle. “Intent changes guilt. It does not erase consequence.”

The words settled between them like falling leaves.

______

“The Fourth Holy Cat Thing teaches gratitude.”

Jaguar bent and lifted a feather from the forest floor. “This was given.”

“It fell.”

“It did and the bird still flies.” He handed the feather to Benny.

“You may keep what the forest freely offers.”

The little kitten accepted it with astonishing care. “As a gift?”

“As a gift.”

______

“The Fifth Holy Cat Thing teaches restraint.”

They reached the creek again. Water slipped over smooth stones, endlessly patient.

“The strongest guardian is not the one who fights most often.” Jaguar crouched to drink.“It is the one who knows when no fight is necessary.”

Benny watched the current. “So…being strong isn’t about winning?”

“No. It is about choosing wisely.”

______

“The Sixth Holy Cat Thing teaches stillness.”

Jaguar sat.
Simply…sat.
Benny sat too.

Thirty seconds passed.
Then forty.
Then a minute.

The forest slowly forgot they were there.

A doe stepped quietly into the clearing. She lowered her head to drink. Never once realizing two cats watched nearby.

Benny hardly dared breathe.

When she finally disappeared into the trees he whispered, “She came because we stopped chasing.”

Jaguar smiled. “The world often approaches those who stop demanding its attention.”

______

They walked again.
Long enough for the lessons to settle.

Finally Benny asked, “What is the Seventh Holy Cat Thing?”

Jaguar stopped. The trail curved gently upward, and through the trees they could just make out the roof of the cabin in the distance.

Smoke curled lazily from the chimney.
Home.

“Tell me,” Jaguar said. “Where is home?”

“The cabin.” Benny said quickly.

“No.”

“…The house?”

“No.”

Benny frowned. “I don’t know.”

Jaguar looked toward the distant porch. “The Queen.” Benny blinked. “Storm.” His ears twitched. “…You.”

A warm breeze stirred the branches overhead.

Jaguar nodded. “Home is not a place. It is where your heart recognizes safety.”

The little kitten stared at the cabin for a long time. “So…home follows us.”

“It does.”

______

They began the walk back.

Neither hurried.

The lessons had been spoken.

Now they belonged to Benny.

After several minutes he quietly asked,

“Jaguar?”

“Yes?”

“If I learn all the Holy Cat Things…will I become like you?”

Jaguar stopped. He turned fully toward the little orange kitten. For the first time that morning… he smiled. Not the restrained smile he sometimes offered the Queen. Not the amused smile Benny occasionally earned.

A smile older than memory.
Gentle.
Proud.
Hopeful.

“I hope not.”

Benny’s ears drooped. “…You don’t?”

“No…I hope you become something I never could.”

“…Better?”

Jaguar’s great head inclined. “You will never guard the Boundarylands.”

“No.”

“You will never carry my burdens.”

“No.”

“You were born for another purpose.”

Benny whispered, “What purpose?”

Jaguar stepped forward. Resting one immense paw upon the top of Benny’s head. His voice became impossibly soft. “You remind the Queen to laugh.”

Benny’s eyes widened.

“You remind Storm that joy should never be silent.”

A lump formed in the kitten’s throat.

“And me…” Jaguar looked toward the sunlight filtering through the pines. “…you remind me that not every soul must be forged by survival.”

Silence settled around them.
Not empty.
Full.
Sacred.

Benny suddenly launched himself forward, wrapping both little forelegs around Jaguar’s chest.

The guardian stood perfectly still.
Then…
very gently…
he lowered his head until it rested against the top of Benny’s.

Far beneath the forest floor…below roots…below stone…something ancient stirred.

Not the words.
The truth behind them.

An old guardian… passing hope… to one who had never needed to become a weapon.

The earth warmed ever so slightly beneath their paws.

Jaguar’s ears flicked.
He noticed.
He knew.
But he said nothing.
Some greetings belonged to another day.

The forest had heard enough.

The Holy Cat Things had been spoken.

And somewhere between laughter, patience, feathers, and home…a little orange kitten had quietly begun the journey toward becoming exactly who he was meant to be.
